What is Nasal Polyp: Nasal Polyp is the flesh that originates from the sinuses and grows into the nose. The difference from turbinate growth is that there are meats that are not normally inside the nose. They cause more nasal congestion than turbinate enlargement and tend to enlarge more. Sometimes they can hang out from the tip of the nose or from the nose to the throat.
Why Nasal Polyp Occurs: The most important reason for the formation of nasal polyps is allergies. However, it can sometimes develop due to chronic sinusitis. The mucosa lining the sinus swells due to allergy or inflammation and grows out of the mouth of the sinuses and into the nose. Nasal polyps usually occur on both sides.
How the Surgery is Performed: In recent years, surgeries for nasal polyps have been performed with the endoscopic method (image method). Since the nasal polyp is also found in the sinuses, it should be treated in the relevant sinus. In the endoscopic method, the light source, camera and monitor are entered through the nose and the polyp in the nose and sinuses is cleaned. Sometimes it may be necessary to enter under the lip to enter the maxillary sinus on the side of the nose. The surgery can be performed with both local and general anesthesia. After the polyp is cleaned, it is tried to normalize the opening of the sinuses into the nose.
What Kind of Complications Does the Surgery Have : Apart from anesthesia complications, the most common problem in endoscopic surgery is bleeding. Sometimes this is severe enough to prevent the surgeon from working, and the main purpose of the operation becomes to stop the bleeding. Apart from this, serious complications may develop as there are important organs around the nose and sinuses. These include serious problems such as injury to the eyeball and nerve by entering the orbit, perforation of the cerebral cortex, leakage of cerebral fluid into the nose, injury to the large vessels leading to the brain, brain abscess, as well as some minor and later treatable complications.
What should I pay attention to after the surgery : The most important issue after the surgery performed with the endoscopic method is the proper dressing. In polyp surgery, dressing means proper cleaning of the inside of the nose. For this, you will need to go to your doctor every few days at first and then less frequently. How many days it should be cleaned depends on the course of the surgery and the doctor’s preference. Your doctor will tell you when to see the next meeting after each dressing. The patient can try to prevent adhesions and deposits by rinsing the inside of the nose with saline.
