Septoplasty – Nasal Bone (Deviation) Surgery

Septum deviation, that is, the curvature of the nasal cavity, is present in many people. However, it is treated by looking at how much problem it causes to the patient. The only treatment is surgery.

Since many times there is a problem in the outer part of the nose, it is also performed together with rhinoplasty. Information about septum deviation was also given in the training hall.

Is the operation difficult for the patient? : SD surgery is considered an easy surgery with the latest developments in surgical technique. However, it should not be forgotten that it is still an operation. Both local and general anesthesia carry some risks. However, this is also an extremely reduced risk. Although the duration of the operation varies, it is considered to be approximately 1 hour. At the end of the surgery, a tampon is placed on the patient’s nose and these tampons are left in place for approximately 48 hours. Tampons can cause headaches and difficulty sleeping. After the tampons are removed, the patient continues his normal life.

What Kind of Problems May Occur in the Surgery: SD surgery is an operation with an extremely low complication rate. Rarely, a hole may occur in the chamber inside the nose, which does not pose any inconvenience to the patient. If an excessive amount of bone and cartilage is removed from the nasal chamber, a collapse of the nasal dorsum may occur.

How the Surgery is Performed: In SD surgery, the curved parts of the bone and cartilage are corrected. Curved parts that cannot be corrected are removed. Sometimes, some of the removed cartilage is corrected and replaced. The surgery can be performed with both local anesthesia and general anesthesia. Since it is worked inside the nose, there are no surgical scars on the outside. After the operation, a tampon is placed in the nose. Recently, this surgery is also performed with the endoscopic method (image method), but it is not necessary only in patients with septum deviation.
